Create Better Learning Experience

9. Analogy tool

Case 3: Analogy Tool

I can use Tree-Net to build a tool, which can support users' solving problems with metaphors and analogies.

Structure 1: Target, source and shared patterns

To reason with analogies, we generally have a target, a source, and shared patterns.

Structure 2: Subject, action, object, result, needs, method, & tool

This is a common structure to describe what we do, why do we innovate, how a tool can change the world, the procedures of conducting learning-design, etc.

Combining Struture 1 and Structure 2, we can create a Tree-Matrix (Another way to call Tree-Net), we want to see how the matrix can be activated. In other words: we want to see what and how the network of analogies can be activated.

For the following matrix: S= Sources, SP= Shared Patterns, T= Targets

A Tree-Matrix without being activated, or before being activated After a full activation, a Tree-Matrix might look like this way:

In reality, in a given time, when using a metaphor/analogy, we usually do a partial activating explicitly. With a tool,we can do the activating explicitly, parallely, systematically, collaboratively.

We want to turn 'fossile poetry', to 'poetry on the table'; we want to make hidden metaphors exposed, being visible, being manipulated like toys.

Multiple Windows for the tool

Window 1: Tell the story

Tell the story of analogis with text

Window 2: Illustrate with Inno-map

Illustrate the analogies with Inno-map: any combinations of maps: SmartArt, concept map, flow chart, illustrations etc.

Window 3: Illustrate with Tree-Matrix

Illustrate the analogies with Tree-Matrix

Window 4: Define with semi-structured functions

Formly define the  analogies with semi-structured functions

Window 5: Relate to other Tree-Matrix

Relate the current Tree-Matrix  to other Tree-Matrix

Window 6: Group collaboration

Support group efforts for co-building analogies

Analogy Tool Case 1: we activate a network of analogies when using metaphors

Scheme are like play, "Play" is the metaphor for my activating a network of analogies.

Analogy Tool Case 2: Learn through activating analogies

When I learn about the structure of neuron, a bowl of noodle helps!

Analogy Tool Case 3: A multiple-discipline team innovate through co-activating analogies

A group are trying to innovate ways of visualizing in learning-design, with co-activating analogies.

Analogy Tool Case 4: Activate analogies for a metaphor in Marcy Driscoll's book

It is like blindmen's touching the elephant, each theory illuminates some aspects of learning while obscuring others.

Analogy Tool Case 5: Activate analogies about Learning-Design

Learning-design is about design, there are many fields about design: graphic design, foods design, architecture, software design etc. We can learn from other design fields through analogies.
